Set against the back-drop of the California Surf Museums' latest exhibits, attendees and guests are guaranteed to be dazzled by this fun and educational annual event.Thursday is Bring Your Mighty Uke Night!An important part of surf culture is the music, and what better way to start off the Festival on Thursday night than with the iconic ukulele, which has captivated surfers through the years? The documentary Mighty Uke will share the amazing phenomenon that the ukulele is taking over the world, one pluck of the strings at a time. We have a very special musical presentation featuring Bill Tapia and Pat Enos following the screening – bring your uke along! You’ll learn that this fun and charming instrument has heart and soul and, most importantly, transcends boundaries. This is one instrument that always puts a smile on your face!Friday is Chicks Who Rip Night!Special programming will feature films by, for, and about, the ladies of surf. We will be presenting footage of some of the hottest women surfers on the water today. Mingle with our special guests, be a part of the USA Premiere for the documentary Oceanides, sponsored by Keep A Breast Foundation. The dynamic Lease A Message is one of the year's best films showing how the ladies rip. When you watch this film, you’ll be blown away how powerful the women have become in the water. Carissa Moore’s surfing in this film shows why she just may be the number one woman in the world! This is the first surf festival to honor the ladies of surf with a full program.Saturday is Surf Cinema SaturdayThis day features a cornucopia of surf films. We start with Chasing the Swell by Sachi Cunningham, featuring the big waves from Mavericks and Puerto Escondido and the amazing surfers who challenge them. Splinters, a top surf film that world-premiered at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival, is about the first-ever National Surfing Championship in Papua New Guinea and how it changed the lives of several surfers from the host village of Vanimo. We welcome the return of the CSF’s first winner of the Big Shorts From Little Groms filmmakers contest, Victor Pakpour. His first feature surf film, Blow Up, shows how this talented grom has become a true surf filmmaker. TransWorld SURF’s Surprise Excitement Party will follow, the newest film from Chris Coté, Editor at Transworld Surf Magazine. Coté shows how John John Florence, Mark Healy and Kelly Slater continue to rip it up across the globe. The day ends with the San Diego Premiere of Doug Walker’s Lost and Found. About four years ago, Doug found three boxes of slides and negatives of surfers at the Rose Bowl Swap Meet in Pasadena, California. A lifelong surfer, he was intrigued and took them home. He recognized images from Surfing Magazine from as far back as 1972. Doug traveled for over three years finding the people as well as the photographers who lived the era and captured beautiful stories which if not told would be LOST. Do not miss Surf Cinema Saturday!Sunday is Silver SundayThe Festival closing day begins with our 4th annual “Big Shorts From Little Groms” filmmakers contest. Kids 18 and under were invited to make a short action sports film no longer than 5 minutes. The best films will screen and a panel of judges will present awards to the films, with an overall Festival Grom filmmaker winner. Lucky winners in the past have gone on to be hired by some of the largest surf companies in the world, with their job making films. The Still Point, by Taki Bibelas, is one of the major award-winning films screening in film festivals this year. This French filmmaker, inspired by the work of T.S. Eliot, asks world pioneer surfers about their experience of what it is like to be in the still point of the water. The answers are insightful and thought provoking. Interviews with Mickey Muñoz, Tom Morey, Paul Strauch, Skip Frye, Jericho Poppler, Steve Pezman, Jeff Divine, Doc Paskowitz, George Downing and many more, have made this film intriguing and in demand! Closing the Festival will be the annual Silver Surfer Award, this year presented to San Diego’s legendary surfer and shaper, Skip Frye. Come join people from the community and surf industry in honoring Skip for his contribution to surfing through the years.
